Painter, sculptor, and engraver, Hussein Madi was born in 1938 in Chebaa in South Lebanon. Known for his colorful works that harmonise abstract design and Islamic art, he is today one of the Middle East’s most famous artists.
After completing his studies at the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts in Beirut, Madi moved to Rome, Italy, studying everything from frescoes and mosaics to sculpture techniques in bronze and wax. In 1986 he relocated to Beirut, where he has been working ever since. Inspired by European artists like Matisse and Picasso, he displays superb draftsmanship, his eye notably sensitive to the linear definition of form.
In the past decade, Madi has become one of the most commercially successful artists in the Middle East, setting a record in 2018 with the sale of his Baghdad Landscape painting, which sold at an auction for $75,000.
